Migrant Voice - Interactive storytelling workshop countering hate and misinformation

Join us for an evening of conversation, storytelling and community alongside the powerful photography exhibition ‘Waterline’, which sheds light on the human realities of migration and the stories that too often go unseen or unheard.

When: 14th August from 5-8pm

Where: at Greatorex, 10 Greatorex St, London E1 5NF

Inspired by the exhibition, and hearing from the writer, photographer and exhibition organiser Nathan Akehurst, we will run an interactive storytelling workshop exploring how we can stand up to hate, division and misinformation.

This is also an opportunity to come together to socialise, network, celebrate our community and support one another in a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. The evening will conclude with drinks and informal networking, giving everyone the chance to connect with old friends and meet new people.

At the creative workshop we will be exploring:

  • Which migration stories are missing from public conversation?
  • What do we want others to understand about our lives and experiences?
  • How can we use creativity to challenge stereotypes and build understanding?

This is more than a discussion. During the event, Participants will have the opportunity to create short videos, audio clips, and written reflections or personal letters that capture their experiences and perspectives.

By sharing our experiences in our own words, we can help replace misinformation with understanding, make unheard voices heard, and create a more honest conversation about migration.

Whether you come to view the exhibition, meet new people, share your story or simply listen, we would love to see you there.

The Waterline exhibition by our former colleague Nathan Akehurst is a photographic display of stories from the search and rescue community in the Central Mediterranean, narrating the month-long voyage of a civil sea rescue vessel where humanitarian volunteers fill a gap left by state neglect and state-sponsored violence, as they search for people in distress at sea and bring them to safety. Through this maritime journey emerges a wider story of a fractured world; the mosaic of countries and circumstances where people are moving from and to, whether it is the multinational crew or the people seeking refuge. The violence, criminalisation, and slander faced by people crossing - and increasingly people who assist them - emerges through these stories, holding a mirror to Europe's hypocrisies and retreat from its professed values. The fragile maritime environment also opens up conversations about the intersections between human and environmental dangers, while the sea’s liminality allows for explorations of transitions, identity and belonging.
