Migrant Voice - Our West Midlands 'Migration. Making Britain Great' event

To launch our 'Migration Making Britain Great' project activities in the West Midlands, Migrant Voice is kicking off 2024 with a roundtable on how we can challenge the hostile rhetoric on migration.

Date: 25 January from 6-8pm followed by a reception (8-9PM)

Venue: Millennium Point, Curzon Street, Birmingham,  B4 7XG

(we are in Level 4, Curzon event suite, main meeting room)

We will hear from a number of speakers including local sports personalities, followed by a discussion. We will come together to discuss how to challenge the existing narratives around migration, and place migrants' experiences at the forefront of any discussions. We will be looking at, among other things, how we can use sports to tell different and positive stories of migration and challenge racism and xenophobia.

Speakers will include:

Nazek Ramadan, Director of Migrant Voice

Ged Grebby, Chief Executive, Show Racism the Red Card

Gary Pluck, IMIX Regional Lead (West Midlands)

Emma Rose the President of NEU (National Education Union)

Koyar Kurdy, Kurdish Mixed martial arts (MMA) star

Benard Njenga, student, and active in local community football team

You can sign up for the event here or by emailing loraine@migrantvoice.org or on 078 491 82225

'Migration Making Britain Great' is a new initiative in partnership with Show Racism the Red Card and IMIX to celebrate migration across the UK, and particularly the regions of the Northeast, West Midlands and Scotland.

Using education, facts and sporting role models, the initiative aims to challenge and address many of the myths surrounding migrants and celebrate the enormous contribution made by those who have made the UK their home.

These are not just events for the sporty though. This is the start of an exciting time for a wide variety of activities which will show just how much immigration brings to the country, and why we should be celebrating it.

We look forward to seeing you all there.
