Migrant Voice - BBC Newsnight covers TOEIC injustice for a second time

On 23 February, BBC Newsnight covered the TOEIC injustice for the second time, following its investigation earlier this month. The programme again revealed fundamental flaws in the data used by the Home Office to accuse students of cheating on an English language test. Thousands were thrown out of the UK with no right of appeal and with no evidence against them.

The latest BBC Newsnight programme revealed that 26 compensation claims are under way.

MV member Asiya Iram was one of tens of thousands wrongly accused of cheating.

She told BBC Newsnight: “It was the darkest period of my life, all the time I was scared of being detained or deported.”

Asiya’s daughters Saba and Shifa also spoke of their experiences being detained as a result of the allegations of cheating against their mother. “I was crying so bad,” said Shifa. “I wanted to shout: ‘Why are we here?’”
