Migrant Voice - Network Meeting February 18th

The last meeting of our London network saw interesting updates and discussions on the new settlement rules for non-EU migrants and on the topic of refugee children’s resettlement.

The meeting, which took place on February 18th at Migrant Voice, heard a presentation from Don Flynn, Director of the Migrants Rights Network on the impact of the new settlement rules coming into effect from April 2016. From this date, non-EU migrants will only be eligible to settle in the UK permanently if they are earning at least £35,000. Don highlighted the impact this will have, and in particular the disproportionate effect it will have regionally, on women and the young. Don highlighted some of the work being done to raise awareness and campaign about the issue.

Maria Fernandez Coll, from Citizens UK shared with us an update on the work she has been involved in with the ‘safepassage' campaign where a group of volunteer lawyers, interpreters and refugee charity specialists setting work to help unaccompanied refugee children to be reunited with their families in the UK.

The meeting discussed possible media actions and initiatives to take to raise awareness around these two topics. An opportunity to work on specific media projects around these issues will be the upcoming Migrant Media Lab on February 25th.

The meeting also heard requests for participants in several research projects, an art project and collaboration with a theatre project.

The meeting concluded with networking.
