Migrant Voice - Network meeting 25th November

Birmingham

Around 30 of our Birmingham members came together on 25th November for our Migrant Voices for Change Network meeting.

A key theme for this meeting was the new Immigration Bill 2015 and in particular the impact it will have on our rights. We were joined by Aliya Khan and Margaret Finch from TRP Solicitors who outlined practical aspects of the Bill which would affect us. These included tougher rules for undocumented migrants with regards to bank accounts, driving licences, Right to Rent and access to public funds. Following this, we discussed ways we could take action to make our concerns heard – including writing to our MPs, working with other campaigning organisations already working on the issue to provide case studies and personal stories, and sending video blogs to MPs showing real people’s lives in their constituency and then sharing these on social media.

We also heard from Alicja from the Polish Expats Association about their new project supporting Polish (and other migrants), the Edington Welcome Centre.
