It has been reported that staff at Yarl's Wood are routinely humiliating female detainees. Two thirds of the women interviewed for the report, by Women for Refugee Women, had been on suicide watch, dealing with high levels of depression. It is claimed that male staff monitor female detainees whilst they are showering, using the toilet or when they are naked in their rooms. Many of these women had been victims of sexual abuse in their own countries such as rape, forced marriage and forced prostitution.
In June 2014 there were 31 allegations of sexual contact against centre staff and a number were dismissed. The company Serco are contracted to run this detention centre and is contracted to do so for another 8 years. In a statement Serco have said that these allegations are "uncorroborated". Detaining women who have been victims of trafficking, torture and sexual exploitation is a controversial move and the Labour party have promised to prohibit the detention of women who have experienced torture and sexual abuse if they win the election.
