Migrant Voice - Network meeting general election special Glasgow

Migrant Voice organised an 'election special' network meeting in Glasgow on May 9th, similar to the ones organised earlier in London and Birmingham to explore the challenges and opportunities for migrants in the current environment. This is also to ensure we develop key messages and have clear asks for politicians on the doorsteps following the call for a snap election.

It is important that we come together as migrants from different background and Britons to build support for the rights of all. We all have a say and a voice and we need to come up with and share our ideas for what a fairer immigration policies would look like based on our own experiences.

The meeting explored opportunities to engage in the democratic process making our voices heard and our views and demands clear with recommendations for fairer policies. The meeting is another opportunity to get more prepared to engage with and present our asks to candidates at the doorsteps.

Participants also discussed the importance of fighting for the rights of EU nationals as we need to call for everybody’s rights, preserve people’s existing rights and aspire to lift the rights of others to the same level rather than reducing the rights of all in a race to the bottom.

The meeting  looked at the situation for the participating migrants, their fears, concerns, impact of certain policies on them, their hopes as well as what actions they are planning to take in order to defend their rights in the place they now call home.

Participants came up with specific calls/asks for Scottish and UK governments and a number of practical actions.
